What is visual training?
Today's visual world with television and computers puts an ever-growing demand on your eyes. Computer work is a part of the everyday life of more and more people. The great strain on vision can result in a vicious circle where by straining your eyes when doing near work you may worsen your vision, which makes it necessary to strain your eyes even more.

What is 'binocular vision'?
Binocular vision refers to the way in which the eyes cooperate and work together as a team. Poor binocular vision results from poor eye teamwork. For instance if you are not able to voluntarily cross your eyes, or if you often see double, you may have poor binocular vision. The eyes can, however, be trained to cooperate more efficiently. Research has shown that the effect of visual training is a normalization of the binocular vision and the effect is powerful and permanent.

The purpose of visual training is to optimize one's sight, binocular vision, and visual skills, thereby remedying the symptoms of defective binocular vision. While the effect of training other parts of the body is obvious, very few people that realize that vision also benefits from training.

Visual training is however not only a fitness and strengthening program for the eyes. It is also about learning deficient eye teaming and eye movement skills, i.e. training the cooperation between the body (the eyes) and the brain.

What are the symptoms of defective binocular vision?
Defective binocular vision can be the reason why:

  • You often get headaches
  • Your have problems concentrating
  • Text becomes blurred while you are reading
  • You must close one eye when reading for a long period of time
  • You skip or re-read lines when reading
  • Your reading speed is poor
  • You have difficulties clearly focusing objects
  • You experience difficulties adjusting your focus from near to far or from far to near
  • You have a burning and/or pulling sensation of the eyes
  • You see double
  • Your eyes itch or water
  • You have problems in adjusting to progressive addition glasses

It is rare to suffer from all of the above mentioned problems at the same time. Nearsightedness, farsightedness, or structural defects of the eyes do not have a direct influence on the cooperation of the eyes. Many people who do not need glasses or contact lenses have a poor binocular vision. On the other hand, a farsighted person with substantial structural defects could have normal binocular vision.

Who can benefit from visual training?
There is consensus among optometrists and ophthalmologist that visual training does indeed work. However there are different opinions about how many people have an actual need. Based on our experiences from many years as optometrists and working with eye doctors, we have found that a large portion of the population could benefit from visual training because they have a poor binocular vision.
Research and experience have shown that many different groups of people can benefit from visual training. For example:

  • People with computer or near work
  • Students and others who read a lot
  • Athletes and others who are dependent on their ability to quickly see and focus on objects
  • Pilots and others who are very dependent on their sight in their work
  • People who have symptoms of a defective binocular vision (see symptoms of a defective binocular vision above)
  • People who can't voluntarily make their eyes cross

Every time you have to look at an object at a short distance (especially within 20-30inches) the eyes have to be turned inwards, which is done by the outer eye muscles, coordinate their focus, and be directed towards the exact location to be adjusted in order for the object to appear sharp and clear.
This is a very complicated process which involves 12 eye muscles, 3 cranial nerves and both the autonomic and the voluntary nervous systems. Actually, the human body exerts no other process (including digestion) which demands such heavy co-operation between muscles, cranial nerves and nervous systems. This process must be functioning without problems as well as being optimal through the entire day. Since this is rarely the case, most people could benefit from visual training and the optimization of the cooperation of the eyes.
